Last Cast of the Week, 9/2/2016

Most Fridays on Casting Across are  devoted to other people’s contributions in the fly fishing community. Articles, pictures, social media accounts, videos, podcasts, products, and more will be featured on The Last Cast of the Week.

Today, I’m sharing items from The Missoulian, The Fly Shack, & In The Riffle.

The Missoulian – From Rod to Ride

Everyone has a bamboo fly rod. Not everyone has a bamboo drift boat. Unless, of course, you are Ron Knowles. Living in Missoula, Montana, Knowles has a reputation as a fine craftsman of traditional fly rods. His most recent project takes the demanding and meticulous nature of working with bamboo and puts it in a whole new context. He estimates that over 700 hours were put into the construction of the boat,  Definitely read the article, if just for the opportunity to see the thing!

The Fly Shack – Midge Fly Box

Another fly box? How many does one need? Well, if you fish a lot of midges then the answer might be “a better one.” I’ve seen this design all over the place, but the cheapest that I found was from expo-show stalwart The Fly Shack.  For  $6.99, this will pay for itself if it saves you from losing three sub-24 flies. The box is about the size of a wallet, weighs nothing, and has a hinged lid for each  compartment. Plus, the edges of the compartments are sloped to assist in getting flies out.  For over 15 years, this type of box has been all I’ve used for my tiny flies.

In The Riffle – Stillwater Video

Remember the days of only getting to watch fly fishing videos if you bought them from a mail order service? If you were lucky, the local fly shop had a rental setup. We’re spoiled these days with what we can find online. But with that quantity, the kind of instructional video of yesteryear is less common. In The Riffle has put up some great content from Airflo. Included are two nearly hour-long stillwater tactic videos. If you fish for trout in lakes or reservoirs, these are worth checking out.  And honestly, who doesn’t like watching fishing videos?
