Last Cast of the Week, 7/1/2016

Most Fridays on Casting Across are  devoted to other people’s contributions in the fly fishing community. Articles, pictures, social media accounts, videos, podcasts, products, and more will be featured on  The Last Cast of the Week.

Today, I’m sharing items from  Flymen, Orvis, and Casting Across (?).

Flymen Fishing Company – Surface Seducer Double Barrel Bodies

In the world of fly development, there is always room for innovation. I don’t know who over at Flymen was staring at a traditional popper and thought, “what about two cups,” but it was a good idea. The praise for the new direction in soft body bass bugs has been immediate and strong. Like so many other Flymen products, these bodies allow even beginner tyers to create incredibly effective (and even good looking) flies. With six colors and five sizes, there is no reason to not give these poppers a shot.

Orvis – Digital Catalog

If you are a fan of catalogs, you know that the season for new fly fishing  editions has come and gone. However, there is a good chance that you may have missed Orvis’ digital catalog. Part traditional advertisement, part new-media showpiece, this online  resource is a fun few minutes. The photography is great, as are the short form pieces. Obviously, there is plenty of product placement (with links to the website where you can purchase all things Orvis). The “O” gets flack from every corner of the fly fishing community, but things like this digital catalog demonstrate their commitment to being an industry leader today.

Casting Across – a Podiatry PSA

Okay, so this isn’t specifically fly fishing related. But I thought it was worth sharing… just not worth a whole post on another day. When was the last time you bought new running shoes? If you fish a lot, have you replaced your wading boots? After a long weekend of moving and all the manual labor that goes with it, I decided to finally go for a run. I threw on my running shoes and off I went. My heart, lungs, and brain loved it. The rest of my body – not so much. The next day I used a brand new pair of shoes I had been saving. It was a whole different story. My feet, knees, hips, and back not only felt okay  – they felt better.  So just because your shoes or boots aren’t falling apart doesn’t  mean they don’t need to be replaced. Plus, who doesn’t like buying new gear?
