Letters to the Fly Fishing Editor

Every week I get some interesting emails because of Casting Across. Most of the time, they’re quick observations or pertinent questions from website readers and podcast listeners. I think it is great. And I do my best to respond quickly and thoughtfully.

In fact, I actively encourage feedback. Leading up to podcasts episodes that end in a “0” I solicit questions, comments, and accusations.  (In fact, one such episode is being recorded this week – so email away!)

While accusations might be a bit harsh, I truly am okay with legitimate feedback. I am not above correction. A quote from one of my favorite authors, which is quite appropriate, is: “I always think I’m right, but I know I’m not right all the time.” That just about sums it up.

However, I would say that the vast majority of the critical emails I receive stem from a misunderstanding. Some are from a lack of reading comprehension. Okay, that might be a little condescending.  Some are from my writing being to vague from time to time. That’s better. But these emails look like this:

  • Fly Shop A is the best fly shop. You said that Fly Shop B is  the best fly shop. Change your article!
    • Upon inspection of said article, I said that Fly Shop B was my favorite fly shop. It might be crummy (but I don’t think it is). And it is still my favorite.
  • Your website has a picture of a poorly handled fish on it. You’re the worst.
    • The article beneath the poorly handled fish explains how and why the fish was being poorly handled… and advocates not handling fish poorly.
  • You think company X makes a good fly rod? You ever cast company Y’s fly rods? They’re way better. You don’t know what you’re talking about. Company Y is totally different and totally better and you’re totally dumb.
    • All I said was that I liked company X’s new fly rod. Maybe I am dumb, but I don’t know how that observation proves it.

Yes, I know that it is a lot of fun to pass those exchanges along. After the initial moment of “maybe I am dumb,” I do get a chuckle out of them. But most often, the emails are less confrontational and more positive. In fact, there are many more edifying conversations that I get to engage in. For example:

  • I’m driving through Virginia/Pennsylvania/New Hampshire/etc. Where would you suggest I fish if I only have a weekend?
  • I plan on fishing this particular kind of stream for this particular kind of fish. Would you still recommend the rod you reviewed in this article?
  • Have you read this book? If not, you should!
  • I’m new to fly fishing and I found Casting Across. Can you point me in the direction of some other helpful resources?
  • This is who I am. I just wanted to introduce myself.

That stuff is great. Honestly, it makes the writing/podcasting that much more engaging for me. So don’t hesitate to reach out.

…just be sure you’ve read the article well if you are making an accusation.
