Podcast Ep. 63: Split Shot! (& a Wide World of Weights)

That tiny, compartmentalized plastic cup. You probably had one in your tackle box when you were a kid. You need to have one in your fly fishing vest today.

Because if you’re not using weight, you’re not fly fishing right.

But split shot is just the tip of the weight-option iceberg. Weighted flies, poly leaders, and sink tips – what a time to be alive. In this episode, I discuss some of the pros and cons of these options. I also talk a little bit about some nontraditional ways to think about adding weight to your fly rigs.

If you do end up doing an episode about fly tying I would love to hear something along the lines of things you wish you knew before you started tying or any quick advice for those looking to get into it.

I was going to try fishing the shad run on the potomac for the first time this spring and I know you have to get the flies down. Have you ever fished for shad and if so what equip/fly line would you rec? Thanks!

Excellent podcast idea, Alex – its in the hopper!

Shad on the Potomac is great fun. A stiffer 6-weight should do just fine in most spots. You might want to go a bit heavier in deeper spots, but the fish are just about everywhere so it shouldn’t be an issue. A heavy fly with a poly leader will do the trick. And 10lb flouro is a safe tippet choice. You never know what you’ll hook into in the Potomac.
