Laboring Today, Fly Fishing Yesterday

Good old Labor Day. A day off to celebrate other days off.

I know  that is a gross misrepresentation… kind of…

For me, there will be work today. I’ll be laboriously reading, writing, and – completely unrelated – assembling IKEA furniture.  Don’t worry, I took yesterday afternoon off (to fish). And I’m taking tomorrow morning off (to fish).

Consequently, I’m taking it easy on the Casting Across front so I can get my labor on. That doesn’t mean I’m leaving you high and dry. I’ve got some good things for you, regardless of the intensity of your individual industry.

Here are three quick things:

  • I had an absolute blast fishing some remote brook trout streams over the weekend. The water was cold, the scenery was amazing, and the fish were plentiful. I’m not ready to write it in stone, but my opinion on where the best mountain brookie fishing might be shifting. I know nobody is going to lose sleep over this revelation, but I’ll make the point sooner or later.
  • When I praise a product, I either stand behind it or voice any concerns that pop up. I still maintain that the Douglas Upstream is an incredibly unique graphite fly rod. It is a spectacular small stream rod, and the 8′ 2-weight is a pleasure to  use when casting little bushy dries for eager trout. Here’s my original write-up on the Upstream.
  • If you like fishing and you like running, you need to incorporate the two. I’ve had some amazing fly fishing experiences this summer that have come from quickly getting deep into the backcountry. In an upcoming post, I’ll breakdown how I do it and what things you can think about if you want to give it a shot.

Happy Labor Day from Casting Across.

Let’s face it, nobody can have a home and a family without having to do some of the necessary labor involved with the same.
My wife is about as patient as any man could ask for. But she has her limits as well.
That said, on the days that I plan on taking myself fishing, she is usually very quick to say “that’s a good idea.”
I take care of the necessary things first. She is always aware of this. The yard rarely gets to a point where it needs mowed before I cut it, etc.
The point in all this is simple.
She understands that Papa has to unplug for a while and reset in order to operate at maximum efficiency.
    Work hard, play harder.
Never live to work. But work to live.
    God bless America,
    Long live the republic.

    Excellent article!!!
    Thank you

Thank you, I appreciate the kind words.
Personally, I believe that your writing is better qualified for that title.
In my world, the good stuff is knowing that she will still hold hands with me in church. Or when our grandchildren come over to hang out with Mammy and Papa.

Thank you for your excellent articles.
