Changes at Casting Across

Since I started Casting Across in 2015, my desire has been to share the things I enjoy about the quarry and culture of fly fishing. I set a standard for myself: three posts a week. So, for six years I’ve been publishing content every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Every once in a while an article gives me difficulty. But by and large, writing has been a consistent and fun part of life.

Something else that has been consistent with Casting Across is a lack of marketing. I’ve maybe sunk $50 into ads in the past six years. I think I’ve read one article on optimizing my site’s appeal on search engines. There have been sponsors, but they have all been short-term, handshake deals. Since this isn’t my job, my focus has been on what you read and not how you read it.

Recently, I decided that things needed to change.

And by change, I mean change for the better.

First, I want to streamline how you receive Casting Across’ content. The platform I use for the website automatically generates a notification email. That means three emails a week for the past six years. That is a lot. That is borderline spam, in the most classic definition of the coined term.

So, if all goes according to plan, this is the last “New Post” email you’ll receive. Starting this week, I’ll be sending out a newsletter-style email that includes all three posts from the preceding seven days. Instead of being inundated with messages, you’ll have the opportunity to pick an article (or podcast) that interests you. You can sign up to receive these weekly newsletters on the bottom of this post. Or, you can bookmark the site and check it late morning for new content every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. However you choose to read, I’m happy.

Second, I’ve joined a podcast network. Starting later this week, The Casting Across Fly Fishing Podcast will be a part of Waypoint TV. The content of the show will remain the same, and you’ll still be able to find it on your favorite podcast app. The biggest benefits for me are easier maintenance, marketing, and advertising.

Waypoint has an excellent collection of podcasts in their network. Along with a few other fly fishing shows, there are conventional anglers and a wide variety of hunters under the Waypoint umbrella. I’m looking forward to working through their catalog with you. Being a part of this group will expose the podcast to more listeners, including a large swath of outdoors-folk unfamiliar with fly fishing.  Lastly, it is going to take the majority of the advertising legwork off my plate.

Streamlining Casting Across matters to me. Like you, I’m busy. And this whole enterprise is a one-man operation. The more I can focus on content, the happier I think we’ll all be. These small changes are going to do that.

If you haven’t already, please take a second to subscribe to the newsletter below, If you have any questions or comments, feel free to reach out.

As always, thanks for reading and for listening.
