Although the film came out in 2014, it is still as pertinent and entertaining as it was years ago. Plus, now it is streaming on Netflix. Which means that it is very accessible and worth your time if you haven’t seen it. I was just fishing at the location of a dam that was removed from a large river in Maine, and my awareness of the altered ecosystem was definitely influenced by some of the information in the film. Whether you’re watching with fellow fly fishers or not, this is a documentary that will hold peoples’ attention.
How would you like to watch trout every day? Through Trout Unlimited’s Trout in the Classroom program, kids across the country get to do just that. This is a special time of the year for the kids, teachers, and fish, as the little trout that they have been watching hatch and grow are ready to be released. Most state councils support TiC, and teachers obviously love the opportunity to teach biology, ecology, and more using the tanks and fish. Efforts like this can and do get kids interested in fly fishing, but they also plant seeds for conservation and environmental awareness.
I have nothing against fish pictures and sunset photos. But when something different pops up in my Instagram feed, I pay attention. There are a number of great fly tyers on social media, but I am a huge fan of Williams’ propensity to tie and share traditional patterns. I love to fish classic dries, and he creates some beautiful examples. Additionally, he will usually comment with some historical details. If you aren’t one of his 3,000+ followers yet, do so to see his great work.
