Slap Happy: Lid Rig Mag Band

In fly fishing, flannel, fanny packs, and clunky footwear are all in. So it shouldn’t be  a surprise that another early 90’s fad is perfectly suited to angling.

Last year, Lid Rig came out with the Mag Band. Essentially, it is a silicone-coated slap bracelet with a magnetic surface. Yes: those slap bracelets. But this uncomplicated piece of gear isn’t a fashion trend. It is a functional little item that you can use in a handful of unobtrusive ways. And sometimes, those very things that are compact and unfussy produce outsized benefits.

Here are four helpful ways to use this simple product from Lid Rig, including a few that don’t involve wrists or being on the water:

It holds flies… obviously.

The easiest way to employ the Mag Band is to slap it on your wrist and drop your flies on the magnetic panel. It works to dry your wet flies. It works to keep your favorite patterns at hand. It works to hold your second or third fly on your nymph rig ready as you get everything put together.

It holds rods… while you’re getting dressed.

We’ve all set our rod against our car, only to have it fall down while we’re putting on waders.  We’ve also all dangled a few feet of rod out of a tailgate while tying on flies. Both situations are less than ideal. Placing the Mag Band face on the panel of a vehicle and then allowing the bracelet to wrap around your rod keeps it away from doors and the ground.

It holds tools… saving you bench time.

The kind of fly tyer who cranks out dozens of patterns at once  is the kind of fly tyer who wants efficiency. Every movement and each reach adds time. A few tools just at the wrist allows for ergonomic, stable, and speedy access. The Mag Band is for more than just the water.

It holds stuff… keeping everything still and quiet.

Walking on the trail or through the brush can lead to all sorts of problems dangling gear. It may be as significant as noisy clanging. It might be the real nuisance of getting your person snagged on foliage.  Wrapping the strap of the Mag Band around a loop on your pack provides a magnetic dock for all of those swinging gadgets.
