Small stream anglers were some of the earliest western adopters of the equipment and techniques associated with tenkara. Collapsible rods and minimal gear fit right into the methods of those who like to move light and quick into remote places.
Tenkara USA was on the cutting edge of introducing Japanese fly fishing to Americans. With nearly a dozen rods of varying lengths and flex profiles, they’ve effectively covered any and all species and waters anyone would want to pursue. A few of their models utilize a segment-locking system where the angler can fish with a one or two of the last telescoping pieces still in the handle and butt of the rod.
The Rhodo, one such rod, is a perfect fit for the small stream fly fisher.
Collapsing to under 21”, and extending to three lengths (8’10”/9’9”/10’6”), the Rhodo handles everything from brush tunneled creeks to medium rivers. And at just over 2 ounces it can easily go to all those places.
On one end of the spectrum, the 10’6” length allows for a more “traditional” tenkara feel. At full extension, one is able to make longer casts and mend with ease. At this length, it is a capable tool for ponds and open rivers.
When set at 8’10”, the Rhodo provides something special for the small stream angler. Unlike the often slower cadence required to cast an 11 or 12-foot tenkara rod, the shortest setting makes for a crisp casting experience. Since the bottom two segments are still collapsed into the butt section, the “backbone” is more rigid. More than most tenkara rods, the Rhodo casts like a western fly rod when at the sub-9” length.
Regardless of which length you choose, the rod casts well with a line and leader of around 15’. As is the case with any fixed-length fishing, playing and landing fish requires a little bit of a different approach. Once dialed in, it becomes second nature. The Rhodo is indeed ideal for mountain trout, but don’t sleep on using it for larger fish. A light, versatile rod like this is an excellent companion for the hiker, minimalist, or tenkara aficionado.
