Rusty Flybox: Outside the Fly Shop

I’m sure there is a fly shop out there that will sell you anything and everything that you would need to go fly fishing. But I doubt it.

Reason being, there is a lot of non-fly fishing stuff that I need to get to the water and stay on the water. If you’re engaged in any other outdoor activities, there is a very good chance that you already pack some hiking, camping, and paddling gear as you fill your bag for angling. I’m not advocating cutting out fly shops. In fact, some of the best ones have already sought to diversify their offerings.

In this post, I’ve got three posts with some excellent non-fly fishing fly fishing gear:

  • My favorite fly fishing shoe
  • Three items worth adding to your angling load
  • Where and how to shop

Astral: My New Favorite Fly Fishing Shoe

They are till going strong five years later. But I decided to add another pair of shoes to my gear closet. I went with the Astral TR1 Mesh. They’re built more like a light hiker than a sneaker. Their form and function seems to be a better fit for the environments and fly fishing I find myself in these days. Suffice it to say, I think I’ve found my new favorite fly fishing shoe.

Gear Outside the Angling Aisle

There are plenty of pieces of gear that aren’t explicitly fishing-related. If you stop and look in your gear closet or the back of your trunk, you’ll probably notice that some of the things you rely on haven’t come from fly shops.  Some of those things really improve your experience, and by extension, your fishing. Here are three reviews of products from “outside the fly fishing industry” that I’ve enjoyed on the water.

A Wider World of Fishing Gear

While fly shops should get a good amount of your business, there are plenty of “outside the industry” options for everything besides the core fly fishing gear. Plus, you never know what you’ll find in the camping, automotive, or  exercise section of the store that improves your time in and around the water.

Do you have any products that wouldn’t normally be found in a fly shop that are an essential part of your angling? Let me know below!
