How do you spend those little breaks that you get throughout the day? Power naps? Social media? Coffee coffee coffee? Reading fly fishing blogs?
I know that there are people that go 8+ hours strong without any easing up, but most folks have five minutes here or there in between meetings, assignments, etc. Truth be told, you might be surprised to see how much “free time” you have throughout the day. Now, I am all about productivity. Be a good worker.
But if you get breaks, what are you doing with them?
There are some small things that you can do, even with just a few minutes, that can get you your fly fishing fix.
Here are three ideas:
- Casting Practice If you have a little bit of space, you can cast. You might draw a little crowd (what’s wrong with that?), but working on accuracy or technique is worth it. As always, you will notice things when casting on grass that you won’t notice while fishing. These observations, and little adjustments, can happen in only a few minutes.
- Fly Tying You don’t have to always tie a dozen flies. Turn on the radio, whip up a few wooly buggers, and after a few coffee breaks you will have enough to refill a row in your fly box.
- Knots This might sound a little silly, but trust me: you can always be better at tying knots. Imagine having the muscle memory to quickly tie a blood not with light tippet in cold conditions. Sound worth it? There is only one way to develop that skill. Practice. Put an old spool of mono in your desk, and tie a few knots every day.
- Read Casting Across What? I think it is a worthwhile use of a few minutes… There are also other good fly fishing websites, YouTube channels, and social media accounts.
What do you think? Sounds better than Sudoku, right?
