When it comes to learning fly fishing, there is nothing like in-person, on the water instruction. But if you are unable to find an opportunity to schedule coaching, or if you want something to refresh or reiterate what you’ve already learned, online resources can be invaluable.
It is even better when online resources are high quality. Such is the case with Far Bank Fly Fishing School.
No one has the false impression that Far Bank doesn’t want you to buy their gear. But most of the people at Sage, RIO, Redington, and Fly Water Travel are fly fishers who want you to use their gear. As part of the company’s renewed branding, they have included a significant education and engagement facet. Along with the videos, they have a site that features recommendations for new anglers from across their labels. The six episodes of the Fly Fishing School are at the center of the whole initiative.
The initial batch of videos is called “New to Fly” and covers the following topics:
- What is fly fishing?
- Basics of fly fishing gear
- Essential knots
- Making the first cast
- Basic river fly fishing tactics
- Basic lake fly fishing tactics
These six videos are aimed at introducing people to fly fishing. If you’re already a well-seasoned angler, they can be a resource that you can confidently pass on to someone who you are introducing to the sport. More than that, by watching them you can pick up how to teach some of the essentials yourself. And, you can never assume that you won’t learn something new.
The videos primarily feature Simon Gawesworth, Far Bank’s Education and Engagement Manager. Gawesworth has been a fixture in the fly fishing industry for over three decades, and has the ability to concisely articulate both simple and complex concepts. He’s drawing from years of teaching people how to fish well. Combine his expertise with high production value, and you have a quality product.
Another season is already in the works. These videos will focus on taking established fly fishers to the next level in their skills. But there is plenty more on Far Bank’s “Learn to Fly Fish” portal. Members of the Sage, RIO, and Redington teams share other tips and product insights. There is a whole series of tying videos as well. Along with the online content, Far Bank facilitates in-person learning and fishing experiences.
Check out the Far Bank Fly Fishing School for yourself to see everything they have to offer. And, think about passing on one of the first season’s videos to a friend that you want to see out on the water this spring.
