Last Cast of the Week, 8/5/2016

Most Fridays on Casting Across are  devoted to other people’s contributions in the fly fishing community. Articles, pictures, social media accounts, videos, podcasts, products, and more will be featured on The Last Cast of the Week.

Today, I’m sharing items from Smith Creek, New York Times, and MidCurrent.

If you’d like to be featured in the Last Cast of the Week, or have seen something that others might be interested in, use my contact form or shoot me an email (matthew[at]castingacross[dot]com).

Smith Creek – Rig Keeper

For as much as I love gear, there are still some fly fishing needs that I held out on buying specific  items for. One such piece was something to manage multi-fly rigs. I’d coil up leaders with flies and shot, then try to slide them into leader wallets. I’d stick the flies from a rig in a box full of other flies, and then just cram the leader  and tippet in as I slammed the lid shut. It never worked. So I picked up two Rig Keepers from Smith Creek. This New Zealand company makes some  clever  accessories, with most things trying to solve common on-stream problems. The Rig Keeper is weightless, provides a number of options for storing flies / leaders,  and is equally functional inside or outside a vest/pack. Most of all, it is another product that saves flies.

The New York Times – “Where A River Still Runs Through It”

The film that shall not be named, among certain circles. I’m aware of the reasons for the angst that Pitt, Redford, and co. elicit it some corners of the fly fishing community. But it is also pretty clear that there have been a lot of positives, specifically from a conservation perspective, that have come since  1992. In this article the author is definitely riffing on the movie’s impact on so many would-be fly fishers. From that standpoint it is very interesting. This article in the NY Times, like the film, is the fly fishing point of contact for the general public. It is valuable for those in the sport to contemplate how those outside the sport view us.  It is valuable for conservation efforts, for sharing fly fishing, and for perspective.

MidCurrent – Tippets

If imitation is the highest form of flattery, then I hope that MidCurrent (among a number of others) is flattered by my Last Cast of the Week (among a number of others). The daily “Tippets” section on this pioneering website is a great, quick way to get a glimpse at some excellent fly fishing content from across the web. If you don’t want to wade through thousands of tweets or a wordy, weekly facsimile (hey…),  bookmark the Tippets link and get some of the best of what is out there. You might even get some Casting Across content, from time to time.
