Last Cast of the Week, 8/18/2017

Most Fridays on Casting Across are  devoted to other people’s contributions in the fly fishing community. Articles, pictures, social media accounts, videos, podcasts, products, and more will be featured on The Last Cast of the Week.

Today, I’m sharing items from  The DrakeCast, Sight Line Provisions / IndiFly, Men’s Fitness.

The DrakeCast – Hatchery Creek Video

Have you listened to The DrakeCast? It is the bite-sized podcast from The Drake, and has spanned a wide spectrum of topics in the  10 episodes that have been released thus far. The most recent podcast, “Stream Implants,” explores corporate ecological damage mitigation and hatcheries in less than 20 minutes. It all revolves around a totally synthetic fishery that has been engineered to hold huge fish. But a cool little add-on to the  episode is a drone video of the whole length of the stream. All of it, in one shot. Check out the video, listen to the podcast, and take a minute to think about what in fly fishing is real.

Sight Line Provisions – IndiFly Giveaway

I’ve written about Sight Line Provisions before. SLP is a great company that makes excellent products, has a high reputation within the industry, and is doing good things for conservation. One organization that they’ve partnered with is IndiFly, which works with indigenous peoples through fly fishing to help with various needs and cultural preservation. As of this writing, Sight Line Provisions is running a giveaway on their Instagram account featuring IndiFly. If you can enter in time, do so. If not, follow both accounts for quality pics that open the door to so much more.

Men’s Fitness – The Absolute Beginner’s Guide to “Fly-Fishing”

Warning: You’ll get a pop-up that asks if you want to learn how to build muscle, and the way to close is requires you to click on a button that says “no, I don’t want to be cut.” Some weird part of me enjoys reading popular, non-angling, takes on fly fishing.  You get sentences like this: “If you think you’ve got a strike (aka a bite), your first inclination might be to start reeling it in. Don’t.” Makes sense, right? But that is the stuff we don’t often talk about with beginners… and I’ve had people I’ve taken fishing do just that! You’re not going to learn a lot from an article like this, yet you can use it to learn how others learn. Which, if you are passing on the sport, is very helpful.
