Last Cast of the Week, 6/24/2016

Most Fridays on Casting Across are  devoted to other people’s contributions in the fly fishing community. Articles, pictures, social media accounts, videos, podcasts, products, and more will be featured on  The Last Cast of the Week.

Today, I’m sharing items from  Outside, Trout Unlimited, and Risen Fly.

If you’d like to be featured in the Last Cast of the Week, or have seen something that others might be interested in, use my contact form or shoot me an email (matthew[at]castingacross[dot]com).

Outside – National Parks & National Monuments

Whether there are fish in them or not, we can all appreciate the sites that celebrate the best of our nature and history. And although there isn’t any real qualitative distinction, it is important to know how our Department of the Interior categorizes and classifies these national sites. At the very least, it is a fun little bit of knowledge to  impress your friends and family with. This article is a few years old, but is still very relevant.

Trout Unlimited – The Penobscot is Open

Our relationship with dams in the Unites States is a fragile one. So much of what we have read and seen about the various methods and modes of dealing with dams has focused on the massive, western waterways. In reality, the rivers of the east coast that have been long plagued by obstructions that limit fish passage and alter ecosystems. TU has been an active proponent in the mindful mitigation of dams, and this massive project in Maine is a great example of that facet of their work. Plus, this article is a reminder of the uphill battles we still face on the eastern seaboard.

Risen Fly – New Products (and a sale!)

I’ve written about the company Risen Fly before.  Although they are a newer company, their presence in the fly fishing community in the Mid Atlantic is very impressive.  Just this week, Risen Fly has rolled out some great new products.  A breathable vest, fish-print buffs, a new net, and my favorite – a waterproof backpack. What is being offered is competitive with so much of what is on the market, but with a lower price point. Plus  until 6/29/2016 you can save 20% on select products with the offer code “New.” (But if you’re late on this deal I’d suggest following Risen Fly on social media, as they offer other discounts from time to time.)
