Although I doubt that it will ruffle many feathers or result in any fanfare, I’m making a change to the format of Casting Across. For the first six months of this site, I’ve published basically original content every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I love to write, and the topics in and around fly fishing are so diverse that I can’t imagine ever coming close to exhausting the possibilities.
But I have some changes coming up. I’ll be moving in less than two months, starting a new job, returning to graduate school, and welcoming another child into the family. And I’ll try to fit fly fishing in there somewhere, too.
I want the posts on Casting Across to be of a caliber that I think is worthy of your time. I’d never want to put something on the site “just because.” There is a lot of other good content out there that I already share and comment on time to time, so I want to expand on that concept.
Consequently, I’ve decided to turn Fridays into something devoted to other people’s contributions to the fly fishing community. Articles, pictures, social media accounts, videos, podcasts, products, and more will be featured on what I’m calling the “Last Cast of the Week.”
I’m hardly breaking new ground, here. There are some sites out there that do this on the daily, and do it very well. I’m a big fan of Moldy Chum, Tight Lined Tales of a Fly Fisherman, the Orvis blog, and others.
If you’d like to be featured in the Last Cast of the Week, or have seen something that others might be interested in, use my contact form or shoot me an email (matthew[at]castingacross[dot]com).
Thanks again for reading, and please take a moment to subscribe by plugging your email address in the field on the right sidebar.

Regardless of how long you’ve been fishing and what you fish for, the Behemoth from Redington is worth your attention. This aesthetically striking reel has received a lot of coverage (overwhelmingly positive), so I won’t go into too many details. Basically, a die-cast manufacturing process allows for a revolutionary design and a low price tag. Plus, until the end of June you can get a free spool by filling out the rebate form. For right around $100, this reel is a no brainer if you need something for big trout, bass, or light salt applications. I’ve got one, and I look forward to using it this season.
American Museum of Fly Fishing, Instagram
You’re probably familiar with the American Museum of Fly Fishing. This Manchester, Vermont institution serves as an archive and display of our collective angling heritage. So much of what the museum has to offer is visual, so Instagram is the perfect medium to display their various items and collections. With all of the hero pictures on the platform, it is refreshing to see a historical fly or photo in your feed. If you’re not one of the 3,000-plus that have followed their account (@flyfishmuseum), do yourself a favor and add them today.
Project Healing Waters 10th Annual 2-Fly Tournament Podcasts, Fly Fishing Consultant Podcast
I’ve mentioned Rob Snowhite’s podcast on this site before, but this three-part podcast is great. The first episode has some great interviews, but the second two are really worth a listen. Part two features the keynote speech from journalism legend Tom Brokaw, but also includes a moving personal message from Capt. Kim Smith. Smith is a retired Marine, and her words go a long way to put fly fishing in perspective. Part three is Rob’s conversation with Lefty Kreh. Lefty talks about his service in the military, being one of the first to fly fish the Chesapeake, and casting theory. Most of all, Rob gives a great picture of Project Healing Waters’ impact on veterans and volunteers.
