Last Cast of the Week, 7/13/2018

Most Fridays on Casting Across are  devoted to other people’s contributions in the fly fishing community. Articles, pictures, social media accounts, videos, podcasts, products, and more will be featured on The Last Cast of the Week.

Today, I’m sharing items from  Risen Fly Fishing, Angling Trade / IFTD, &  Boston Globe / Bradford Camps.

Risen Fly Fishing – Gideon Reel

Why am I recommending a reel I’ve never touched with my own hands? For one, I know the quality of the gear that Risen Fly sells. It matches what is out there in the industry in quality, and gets it  into your hands at a fraction of the price. Also, the customer service is excellent. The Gideon sports a disc drag, deep V-spool, and comes in three models (3/4, 5/6, 7/8). I’m not going to list off the comparable models on here, but take a look at the Gideon and you’ll have an idea at how truly competitive it’s $180 price tag is.

Angling Trade – IFTD Videos

Christmas in July! That is what the International Fly Tackle Dealer show in Orlando is for anglers. If you aren’t in Florida this week (and who would blame you… it’s the summer), you need a source to give you the inside scoop. Angling Trade has been the most on the ball with information. Other videos and recaps will be forthcoming, but right now this is your first and best option.

Boston Globe – Bradford Camps

For centuries, Maine and upstate New York were the prime destinations for American fly fishers. These northeast sporting camps were accessible yet remote, wild but comfortable. The Boston Globe gives a quick snapshot of one Maine lodge – The Bradford Camps. Whats even more interesting than the accommodations and the fishing is the story of the blueback trout within the article. Even if this short article just whets your appetite for more information on the history or fisheries, you’ll be pleased.
